What Are American House Spiders?

American house spiders are the most common spider species to be found inside homes across North America. They are yellowish-brown in color with a dirty white abdomen and distinctive dark chevron markings on their bodies. Female American house spiders range in length from 3/16th-5/16th of an inch. Males of the species are slightly smaller in size.
Are American House Spiders Dangerous?
American house spiders can bite, but usually only do so if they are being cornered, threatened, or squished. The venom from their bite generally does not cause a problem for people, but in some rare circumstances, an allergic reaction can occur.
American house spiders are generally considered to be nuisance pests. They build messy and sticky webs in various areas of your house, often in the corners of ceilings where it is hard to reach them to clean them up.
What Causes American House Spiders?
As their name suggests, this type of spider is commonly found living inside of homes and other buildings, creating webs to catch their prey. American house spider webs are often found in corners of ceilings, closets, attics, and basements. They can be especially prevalent in the fall as they move inside to find a safe place where they can overwinter.
