Spring is a beautiful time of year here in the Nashville area. The weather sometimes gets a wee bit wet, but that’s OK. We know that March showers bring April flowers; no matter what that old nursery rhyme says! Unfortunately, insects and pests seem to multiply when the flowers start budding. Ants suddenly have taken up residence in your kitchen, mosquitoes are everywhere; and they are hungry. Stinging insects like wasps, bees, and yellow jackets are buzzing around looking for a good sting! If you don’t want ants moving in, mosquitoes making your family their meal, or yellow jackets dive bombing you, then the time to do something about it is NOW!

Here are some easy pest prevention tips that can cut back on the amount of pests that are infiltrating your house and yard this spring.

  • Repair or replace any damaged screens on windows, doors, and in eave vents.

  • Replace any damaged door sweeps on your entrance doors as well as your overhead garage doors.

  • Fill and repair any cracks, crevices, or holes on the exterior siding and foundation walls of your home and outbuildings. Pay close attention to all utility entrances. Remember mice only need a hole the size of a nickel, and ants and spiders need a crack that is much smaller to get inside!

  • Remove any standing water. Not only is it an invitation for hydration for pests, it’s also a breeding ground.

  • Inspect, repair, and clean out your gutters. A slow moving gutter is also a water source for hydration and breeding.

  • Ensure that all watershed systems are working properly to remove excess water off and away from your home and property.

  • Place all wood piles and scrap wood piles or building materials a fair distance away from your house. These are great homes for rodents and insects alike.

  • Keep your lawn trimmed short to lessen the hiding and breeding places for insects.

  • Properly maintained shrubs should be short, healthy, and should not touch your house or outbuildings.

  • Keep tree limbs trimmed back away from your home or any out buildings. Pests use these as a bridge to gain entrance inside.

  • Keep all trash and recyclables in sealed containers away from your home and remove them on a regular basis. These are food sources and breeding grounds for rodents and insects.

  • Clean, clean, clean! A neat and tidy home that doesn’t have food crumbs, open trash, pet food, and clutter sitting around has a significantly lower risk of pests!
