What are merchant grain beetles?
Adult merchant grain beetles are brown in color, they have 6 legs, antennae, and have an oval narrow shaped body with a flattened head.
They also have 6 saw-like teeth that are found on either side of their head.
Merchant grain beetles are small in size, only growing to be about 1/10th of an inch in length.
Their small size allows them to easily penetrate the packaged food that they use to feed and breed inside.
Are merchant grain beetles dangerous?
Merchant grain beetles aren’t dangerous, they are considered to be nuisance pests, they don’t transmit diseases and don’t bite or sting people. Merchant grain beetles do however infest stored food products, contaminating them and requiring them to be thrown out- causing homeowners stress and money.
Why do I have a merchant grain beetle problem?
Despite their name, merchant grain beetles are usually not found in grain products, but instead inside stored dry foods like cereals, cake mixes, cookies, chocolate, and dry pasta.
