What are granary weevils?
Granary weevils are a type of stored product pest and are a brownish-red color.
Adults grow to be about 1/8th of an inch in length and have a hard-shell body with very noticeable pitted patterns on their heads.
They have non-functional wings, so these pests cannot fly.
Their larvae are wrinkly, grub-like, and whitish in color.
An interesting fact of granary weevils is that when adults are disturbed, they will play dead.
Are granary weevils dangerous?
Granary weevils are not dangerous to people because they don’t bite or sting, and are not known to transmit any diseases. Granary weevils only attack food products and therefore won’t damage personal items or furniture found in homes. They are, however, considered to be a threat to the agricultural industry and can become quite a nuisance inside of homes when they infest and contaminate whole grains and seeds that are stored in kitchen and pantry areas.
Why do I have a granary weevil problem?
Granary weevils can’t fly so the main way that they enter into homes is through products purchased from stores that are already infested with their larvae and eggs. Granary weevil infestations often originate at food processing plants/facilities.

Can I do it myself?
We do not recommend using DIY pest control products to get rid of granary weevils from your home; especially because these pests invade kitchen and pantry areas. Do-it-yourself pest control products are not only often ineffective, but they can be very dangerous to use if not mixed or place properly, and they should never be used in close proximity to food. The best way to safely get rid of granary weevils and to prevent a re-infestation is to get help from a professional pest control expert in Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
