What are fungus gnats?
Fungus gnats are tiny black flies that are often found in and around house and office plants. They are about the same size as fruit flies and may look similar to mosquitoes, just smaller. Fungus gnats have grayish black bodies, long legs, and semi-translucent wings.
Fungus gnats got their name because of their larvae that feed on fungus growing in moist soil. Fungus gnat larvae may also feed on a plant’s root system. In addition to being found in and around house plants, fungus gnats can also be found outside, especially in shaded, irrigated areas of the yard.
Should I be concerned about fungus gnats?
Fungus gnats are not known to be a health concern to humans, but they are a nuisance when they get into your home or office. The adult flies are especially a nuisance to at-home workers as they are attracted to the light given off by our laptop, phone and computer monitors. However, their larvae can be more than just a nuisance for plants.
Fungus gnat larvae damage plants because they feed on fungus growing in the soil and on a plant’s root system. Young or sick plants with delicate root systems are more susceptible to damage from fungus gnat larvae, but all plants are at risk of damage due to these pests.
Why do I have a fungus gnat problem?
Fungus gnats typically get into homes and businesses in one of two ways: They may fly inside on their own due to an open door or window or perhaps attracted inside by a bright light, or they may be brought inside on already-infested plants. Once inside your home or business, fungus gnats will thrive if they have the warm, moist conditions they seek. The most common cause of a fungus gnat infestation indoors is overwatered plants or plants in need of better drainage.
Outside, fungus gnats will thrive in soil that is moist and shaded. If your landscaping does not drain well, you’re more likely to have an issue with fungus gnats around the exterior of your property.

How do I get rid of fungus gnats?
A pest professional can help you diagnose where the fungus gnats are coming from and can give you advice on the best course of action to get rid of them. Often, transplanting infested plants to a new container with better drainage, and/or watering less frequently can make the soil environment less favorable to fungus gnats.
If you have a severe infestation, professional pest control may be necessary to get it under control. If the fungus gnats are entering your home from outside, our team at All-American Pest Control can eliminate the problem at its source to prevent re-infestations. Depending on the situation, you may be able to get rid of fungus gnats that you find in your home or office. Repotting your plants with fresh soil in a clean pot can help eliminate the larvae. Also, make sure to give your plants the appropriate amount of water without overwatering.
