Once they have an established source of food they will continue to return to the source and eventually set up a colony nearby. Ants also need a water source to survive. Carpenter ants in particular find it easiest to eat through moist wood and build their colonies. There are two types of colonies to set up a parent colony and a satellite colony. The parent colony has workers, broods and an egg laying queen. While a satellite colony contains workers, mature larva and pupa. These satellite colonies can continue to thrive throughout the winter months.
