Wolf Spiders

What are Wolf Spiders?

wolf spiders in franklin tennessee

Wolf spiders are common spiders that are found throughout the United States. Generally brown, many have dark brown, pale cream, or yellow stripes or markings on their bodies. Adult females range in size from ⅜ th to 1 ⅜ th of an inch in length, while males are smaller in size.

Wolf spiders have eight spiny legs that allow them to move very quickly, even though their bodies are described as stout and robust. Their eyes are uniquely arranged with four small eyes in the bottom row, followed by two large eyes in the middle row, and two medium eyes in the top row.

Wolf spiders get their name from the fact that they do not use a web to catch their prey, but instead hunt and chase down their prey like a wolf. Because of their large size, hairy appearance, and fast running ability, they give many people a fright when they come into contact with each other.

Are Wolf Spiders Dangerous?

Wolf spiders look scarier and more dangerous than they really are. They are large, fast-moving spiders that will usually only bite if provoked or threatened. The venom from a wolf spider bite is typically not dangerous to humans. If you get bitten by a wolf spider, you’ll likely end up with a raised red welt that is painful, but not particularly harmful to your overall health.

Why Do I Have a Wolf Spider Problem?

Wolf spiders are generally found outside hiding under rocks, landscaping timbers, leaf piles, woodpiles, and other similar areas. They sometimes make their way to the inside of homes, garages, and sheds where they hunt for food. They don’t actively seek out indoor shelter, but once they get inside they tend to stay inside.

If you have small insect pests in or around your home, you may attract wolf spiders. A lot of moisture can also draw these spiders to your property or into your house.
