We all know spring season is just around the corner. It is the season of time when green grass begins to grow, flowers poke out of the ground, trees begin budding and blossoms appear. However, spring is also the onset of more fleas. Fleas begin showing up in the grass, on your pets and in your home.

Fleas can multiply and quickly spread out of control, forcing you to seek professional help. Flea pest control remedies are a must for pet owners. While fleas can be found year round they are especially active in the spring, summer and fall.

Fleas feed on the blood of your pets. While they do not have wings, they have large back legs for jumping. A flea is only about 1/8th of an inch in length but can jump as far as 7 inches at a time. Many times they show up in your yard, transported by wild animals or stray dogs and cats. They can quickly infest your yard, get on your pets or your clothing and end up inside your house. Fleas are prolific reproducers and one pair of adults can infest your home with as many as 250,000 fleas in one month! There are a few helpful hints to control fleas and hopefully lessen the need for a flea extermination.

There is a wise proverb that reminds us, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is certainly noteworthy and will help homeowners avoid an infestation of fleas. Don’t wait until your pet is covered in fleas. Use a monthly topical or oral flea treatment on your pet that has been approved by your pet’s veterinarian. These products are not pesticides but are designed to prevent the growth and development of any flea that may find its way onto your cat or dog.

Wash your pet’s bedding often, reducing the chances of flea eggs and larvae thriving and spreading and hatching into blood sucking fleas. Vacuum frequently as fleas, eggs and larvae burrow into the carpet. Be sure to empty your vacuum into a plastic bag, seal it shut and remove it from your home right away.
