The holiday season is one of those seasons that many of us look forward to. Friends and families will sit down together for some well-anticipated meals, share a few laughs and a few more stories, and of course….  the baked goods! There isn't much better than some fresh baked cookies straight from the oven. That, of course, would depend highly upon whether or not your cookies had bugs in them!

What Are Pantry Pests?

Pantry pests are exactly what they sound like. Pests that enjoy your pantry, feasting on all those delicious dried goods. Though many pests such as beetles and mites can find their way into your pantry, the Indian meal moth is well known to prefer it. The adult Indian meal moth will range from 1/2-5/8 inch long and is either a bronze, copper or dark gray on the rear half of its wings and a yellowish-gray color on the front half. Indian meal moths also referred to as pantry pests or food infesting pests, are commonly found in stored food products such as cereal, grains, dried fruit, dry pet food, pasta and flour. It is in these products that they will lay their eggs where they will later hatch and feed on the food source, ultimately growing to repeat the process.

Finding and Preventing Pantry Pests

Once you are home, you will want to take preventive measures prior to doing any baking just in case, as well as alleviate any future infestations. Here are a few tips to help:

  • Make sure always to double check your food products prior to storage.

  • Transfer newly purchased goods to sealed containers before storage.

  • Regularly rotate your dried goods.

  • Always check dried goods prior to use.

Should you find yourself with unexpected moths flying around in your kitchen, or beetles crawling across your countertops, that could be a sign that pantry pests have infested your home. Make sure to check your pantry thoroughly if you do happen to find any. Make sure to check the containers of any dried or processed foods.

Where Do They Come From?

One of the bigger issues with pantry pests is how they get into the pantry in the first place. The problem starts at the store where your goods are purchased. Taking a few precautionary measures before you get home can go a long ways.  Always make sure to inspect items carefully before you buy them to avoid purchasing products that have been infested and try to avoid purchasing products that have been damaged or opened.
