Everybody knows that April showers bring May flowers. But spring flowers and flowering trees are not the only thing those April showers are going to bring. Let's take a look at what moisture does to inspire pests. And, more importantly, what we can do to deter them.

How Those Showers Best, Bring Forth Moisture Pests

April showers bring forth various moisture pests such as earwigs and silverfish, as well as other pests like those termites and carpenter ants. How? Well, as we all know, rainy weather makes things wet, and when things get wet, pests are more likely to come in close to your home, especially if conditions are right to keep moisture in your yard and close to your home. If your yard has many places where water can pool, then mosquitoes will be glad to lay their eggs there. If you have leaf litter and tangled weeds where moisture collects underneath, then those earwigs and silverfish will love you for it. And if water is allowed to run down the sides of your home, creating soft wood and rotting areas, then termites and carpenter ants will make quick work in chewing their way in. But, be comforted in knowing that there are several steps you can take that will make your wet yard (and wet house) not so wet, and not so appealing to spring pests.

Springtime Prevention Is Worth A Mention

  • Declutter. Make sure everything that allows water to pool in your yard is removed.

  • Remove. If you have leaf piles, areas of overgrowth, or other things that trap moisture underneath, move them from off your property or, at least, away from your perimeter.

  • Trim. Cut back all vegetation away from your foundation and walls, so things can dry out.

  • Replace. If you have mulch, consider replacing it with a dry material such as crushed rock.

  • Fill. Inspect the outside of your foundation and walls and fill in any gaps, cracks, or holes you find.

  • Fix. If you have broken or clogged gutters, leaky spigots or hoses, make repairs so that moisture is properly taken care of.
