What Are Clover Mites?
Clover mites are tiny pests that measure only about 1/30th of an inch in length, which is smaller than a pinhead. As part of the arachnid family, they have eight legs. Clover mites are a reddish brown color and oval in shape.
It’s not unusual to see multiple clover mites running around in the same area. If you squish them, you’ll notice they leave a reddish-colored stain behind. They eat plants and are most active in the spring and summer.
Are Clover Mites Harmful?
Clover mites are considered to be a nuisance pest. They do not bite or pass diseases to humans. They do, however, invade homes in large numbers. Once inside, they can get into curtains, linens, and furniture, staining these items if squished.
What Causes Clover Mites?
Clover mites traditionally live outdoors and feed on plants. In our region, they are most prevalent during the spring and summer months when they are often seen indoors around window sills. They are rarely seen during the fall and winter months.
Clover mites will gain access to the inside of your home through cracks and crevices around windows and doors and in foundations. They aren’t typically trying to get inside your home, but more often do so by accident while crawling around.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get rid of clover mites myself?
Getting rid of clover mites can be difficult because of their large numbers, their small size, and their ability to hide in many areas of the home. Using DIY insecticides from the big box stores can be dangerous to you, your family, and your pets if they are not mixed or used properly.
If you find yourself with a clover mite infestation, your best bet is to contact the professionals at All-American Pest Control. We get rid of your clover mite problem and prevent it from returning.
How can I prevent future clover mite infestations?
To prevent a clover mite infestation, make sure that long grass and weeds are trimmed away from your home. Clover mites do not like to cross rough, bare soil or mulch areas, so forming a strip of mulch or stones between the grass or garden and your home will deter them. Also, be sure you've completely sealed windows, doors, and foundations. Good prevention for clover mites includes a regular exterior application, such as our Perimeter Plus Pest Control or Green Choice Pest Control.
